Meet our Team

Professor Patricia Maguire leads a rapidly expanding transdisciplinary team of healthcare and AI experts as well as industry partners and business leaders.

Also from the UCD ConwaySPHERE research group, the AI_PREMie team includes consultant haematologist and Full Clinical Professor Fionnuala Ní Áinle from UCD School of Medicine, and consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Professor Mary Higgins from National Maternity Hospital.

AI_PREMie is currently being piloted in the three main maternity hospitals in Ireland, capturing 50% of all Irish births (National Maternity Hospital, Rotunda Hospital & Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital).

AI PREMie is a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded research project, carried out in collaboration with Microsoft &
SAS Software.

Patricia Maguire (PI)

Professor Patricia Maguire is an interdisciplinary scientist and inventor who is passionate about the intersection of Artificial Intelligence with Biomedical Science. She is Principal Investigator on AI_PREMie. She is Professor of Biochemistry at University College Dublin and Director of the UCD Institute for Discovery.

Fionnuala Ní Áinle

Professor Fionnuala Ní Áinle is Co-Lead on AI_PREMie. She acts as Clinical Lead in Thrombosis, Haemostasis and Maternal Haematology within the Department of Haematology at the Mater Hospital in Dublin. With Professor Patricia Maguire, she co-directs a translational research group, "SPHERE" at the University College Dublin Conway Institute.

Mary Higgins

Professor Mary Higgins is Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, National Maternity Hospital (Maternal Foetal Medicine Sub-Specialist) and Associate Professor, University College Dublin School of Medicine.

Katrina May Comerford

Katrina Comerford has BSc in Pharmacology and Molecular Biology and a PhD in Pharmacology (UCD). Katrina was a research fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital Harvard Medical School, and The School of Medicine and Medical Science, UCD. Katrina is the project manager of AI_PREMie

Neil O'Gorman

Dr Neil O'Gorman is Consultant in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital. His special interests are 1st trimester ultrasound and screening for aneuploidies and preeclampsia, fetal abnormalities, twins, high risk obstetrics, diabetes in pregnancy, and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Brian Mac Namee

Brian Mac Namee is an associate professor in the School of Computer Science at UCD. He is the Centre Director for the SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning and a Funded Investigator at the Insight and VistaMilk SFI research centres. Brian is also the Director of Training for Krisolis, an Irish data analytics consultancy and training company.

John O'Loughlin

Dr John O'Loughlin is Laboratory Manager at the Rotunda Hospital.

Suzy Whoriskey

Dr Suzy Whoriskey is a postdoctoral researcher in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

Jennifer Donnelly

Dr Jennifer Donnelly is Clinical Director and Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Rotunda Hospital. Jennifer's special interests are in prenatal diagnosis, fetal treatment, medical complications of pregnancy and also preconceptional counselling and pregnancy management.

Martin Kenny

Martin has a B.Sc. in Genetics and Cell Biology (DCU) and an M.Sc. in Translational Oncology (TCD). After completing his PhD in platelet biomechanics (RCSI), he joined the AI_PREMie team as a Research Scientist to develop statistical models using clinical data.

Gerardine Doyle

Professor Gerardine Doyle is a Full Professor of Accounting and Taxation at University College Dublin, is Director of UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School and Associate Dean, UCD College of Business. With a pharmacology background, Gerardine's research centres around the patient, measuring value in health care delivered and the measurement of health literacy for the improvement of patient reported outcomes. A key motivation driving Gerardine’s work is to deliver societal impact by engaging in societal-challenge orientated research to influence national and international policy with special emphasis on health and tax policy.

Zara Molphy

Dr Zara Molphy is Research Program Manager in Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at Dublin’s largest maternity hospital, The Rotunda Hospital.

Kate Cullen

Dr Kate Cullen is Lecture in the School of Business at Maynooth University. Kate's research interests are behavioural in nature and focus on the areas of impression management, ethics, culture and corporate governance particularly within financial services, and health care costing.

Shauna Callaghan

Dr Shauna Callaghan is a Registered Midwife working in the National Maternity Hospital. Part of the UCD Perinatal Research Centre team she is a Research Midwife involved in projects focusing on maternal and infant health, as well as education for healthcare professionals and students.

Luisa Weiss

Luisa has a B.Sc in BIoanalytical Science & Haematology (Fresenius University of Applied Sciences); an M.Sc in Biomolecular & Biomedical Science and a PhD in Biochemistry (UCD). Lusia coordinates data analytics for AI_PREMie.

Ella Fouhy

Ella is a first-year PhD student in the Conway SPHERE Research group. She received her undergraduate degree in Pharmacology (UCD). Her research focuses on extracellular vesicles, women's health and AI in healthcare.

Cora McCann

Cora has a B.Sc in Neuroscience from University College Dublin, and recently graduated with a M.Sc in Biotherapeutics and Business from Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School at UCD. Cora is acting as a Commercialisation Executive for AI_PREMie.

Ana Le Chevillier

Ana has a B.Sc in Physiology (UCD) and a Research M.Sc in medicine and a Graduate Diploma in Clinical and Translational Research. Ana focuses on lab biomarker evaluation and provides support in clinical data management and AI data analysis.

John Curran

John Curran is Principle Systems Engineer at SAS Ireland where he is helping customers build strategic visions for the future through enterprise and cloud modernisation projects using the latest generation AI.

Edward Simons

Experienced commercial investment banker who has performed a range of roles in financial services in the UK, USA and Ireland. Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland. Co-founder of EpiCapture Limited, a UCD spinout that is commercialising an epigenetic test for aggressive prostate cancer.

Andrew Warrington

Andrew Warrington is Senior Industry Advisor in Healthcare for Microsoft.

Sirisha Bellamkonda

Sirisha Bellamkonda graduated from National University of Ireland Galway with an M.Sc. in Clinical Research in 2020. She worked as a Clinical Research Data Assistant in the Western Vascular Institute, Galway prior to taking up a position as a Clinical Trial Coordinator in Royal College of Surgeons Ireland Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at the Rotunda Hospital.
